Environmental responsibility embraces product life-cycle analysis and extends beyond traditional producer responsibility into true product stewardship. As the innovator of numerous novel compounds, Pfizer seeks to understand and ensure effective management of health, safety and environmental (EHS) risks during the discovery, development, manufacture, use and disposal of our products.

 
Pharmaceuticals in the Environment
Pharmaceuticals and their byproducts have found their way into the environment through patient use for as long as medicines have been around. Awareness of this issue has increased with the development of analytical technologies that detect trace amounts of pharmaceuticals and other organic chemicals in the aquatic environment.
Green Chemistry program
Our Green Chemistry program integrates EHS considerations throughout the research, discovery, development and manufacture of our products. Green Chemistry is becoming implanted in how all Pfizer scientists and engineers work. Used Sharps Disposal

If you self-inject a Pfizer medicine at home:

  1. Never throw loose injection devices in the trash or flush down the toilet.
  2. Always use a puncture-resistant disposal container and keep it in a secure location.
  3. Do not throw the container in the trash without first checking your country, state and local requirements. Requirements vary widely across the US and world.
  4. Don't allow the container to be recycled.

Unused Medicine Disposal

Please don't pour medicine down a sink, toilet or storm drain!

Ask a local pharmacy or government about programs to dispose of medicines safely.

If a take-back program does not exist in your community, do the following:

  1. Take the medicine out of its original package and place in an unrelated sealed container, such as a plastic sandwich bag.
  2. Add a small amount of water to dissolve pills and capsules, along with materials such as coffee grounds or kitty litter to make it unappealing for pets and children to eat.
  3. Dispose of the sealed container in household trash, making sure that pets, children and others will not have access.
