Managing Our Footprint
![]()
Pfizer has a long commitment to exemplary environment, health and safety (EHS) performance, and advancing good health in communities where we operate. We are proud of our environmental programs and our many achievements over the years. In the spirit of continuous improvement, we also pursue a more strategic and integrated approach to EHS initiatives that will provide the foundation for a more environmentally sustainable model.
Carefully measuring and monitoring progress are key steps to continually improve EHS performance. We do this through:
- Data collection and verification
- Internal audits
- Facility self-assessment
- Management system reviews
By thoroughly tracking performance, we can spotlight our successes in eliminating or reducing undesirable impacts, quickly and responsibly handle any EHS issues, and identify key areas for improvement.
Watch a video about Pfizer's commitment to reducing our carbon footprint.
We pursue these goals:
- Minimize costs and operational restrictions arising from a carbon-constrained environment
- Reduce GHG emissions
- Assess risks to our operations
- Adapt to the changes of a warming global climate
To do this, we have a Corporate Energy Conservation Guideline (established in 1996) and an internal energy and climate change program (established in 2000).
Pfizer makes substantial efforts to reduce our carbon and energy footprint through global conservation and energy efficiency efforts, and consolidation of certain operations.
Every company office building, manufacturing site, logistics center and R&D facility has an impact on the environment. Pfizer aims to reduce that impact through our Green Buildings program, which emphasizes practices such as energy performance, water conservation, renewable resources, recycling/reuse, waste management and indoor air quality.
While use of water in our research centers and manufacturing facilities is relatively small compared to some other industries, responsible management of water is an important element of our global EHS program. We require facilities worldwide to quantify water use, prioritize conservation measures and support community efforts during drought conditions.
We are committed to reducing waste and effectively managing the waste we generate. Opportunities to recycle and reuse are pursued actively.
To protect the Earth's ozone layer, we are committed to controlling or eliminating the release of harmful compounds wherever possible — including ozone-depleting compounds and volatile organic compounds. Pfizer sets separate public goals and has realized significant reductions.
Pfizer supports and undertakes projects that enhance the environment at site levels and in ecologically rich areas. We restore land, presere wildlife and enrich environmental education.
Like most major industrial corporations, Pfizer investigates and restores sites where we have cleanup obligations under federal, state, and local laws and regulations. We commit resources to protect human health and the environment.
